What is Sodium Alginate?

Sodium alginate is a by-product of the extraction of iodine and mannitol from kelp or sargasso of brown algae, and its molecule is composed of β-D-mannuronic acid (M) and α-L-Gullo. The uronic acid (α-L-guluronic, G) is a (1→4) bond. It is a natural polysaccharide with the stability, solubility, viscosity and safety required for pharmaceutical preparations. Sodium alginate has been widely used in the food industry and medicine.

Sodium Alginate Production Process

Dry or wet seaweed (algae) is crushed, washed with water, extracted with strong alkali water, clarified to obtain crude alginate solution, precipitated with calcium chloride to obtain colored calcium alginate, after decolorization, deodorization Acid treatment, removal of soluble impurities to obtain alginic acid precipitation, and sodium carbonate to obtain sodium alginate, and then dried, pulverized, sieved to obtain sodium alginate powder.

Sodium Alginate Properties

Sodium alginate is a white or light yellow powder and is almost odorless and tasteless. Sodium alginate is soluble in water and insoluble in organic solvents such as ethanol, ether and chloroform. Dissolved in water to a viscous liquid, pH of 1% aqueous solution is 6-8. The viscosity is stable when pH = 6-9, and the viscosity is lowered when heated above 80 °C. Sodium alginate is non-toxic, LD50>5000mg/kg. Effect of chelating agent on the properties of sodium alginate solution The chelating agent can complex the divalent ions in the system, so that sodium alginate can be stabilized in the system.

Sodium Alginate Uses

The high molecular substance, sodium alginate has the functions of suspending, thickening, emulsifying, bonding, etc., and is mainly used as a suspending agent, an emulsifier, a thickener, a capsule of a microcapsule, etc. in the medicament. Used as a binder for tablets (1% to 3%) and disintegrant (2.5% to 10%); used as a diluent in capsules; also used in the preparation of oral sustained release preparations because it can delay the drug from Release in water-soluble suspensions; widely used as thickeners and suspending agents (5% to 10%) in pastes, ointments and gels, and as stable in oil-in-water emulsions The agent (1% to 3%) is used. An aqueous solution of 0.5% to 2.5% can be used to smooth the erosion surface of the skin, allowing aqueous secretions to be removed and dried.
