Dibenzoyl peroxide, also known as benzoyl peroxide, commonly known as initiator BPO, is an organic compound with the chemical formula C14H10O4. It is a white crystalline powder at room temperature, with a slight bitter almond smell and can dissolve It is slightly soluble in benzene, chloroform and ether, slightly soluble in ethanol and water. It is mainly used as a monomer polymerization initiator for polyvinyl chloride, unsaturated polyesters, polyacrylates, etc. It can also be used as a cross-linking agent for polyethylene. Used as rubber vulcanizing agent.

Chemical properties

Benzoyl peroxide is a strong oxidant and flammable. It is extremely unstable in nature. Friction, impact, exposure to bright light, high temperature, sulfur and reducing agents, etc., may cause the danger of fire and explosion. Adding sulfuric acid can also cause combustion. In order to prevent explosions, it is generally used when it is diluted to about 20% with insoluble salts such as calcium carbonate, calcium phosphate, calcium sulfate, or talcum powder, bentonite, etc. Or 25-30% water should be injected during storage.

Use

1. ‌Polymerization initiator‌: Dibenzoyl peroxide is the most widely used initiator for polymerization. It is mainly used for solvent polymerization of PVC, polyacrylonitrile, acrylate, vinyl acetate, chloroprene rubber, SBS and methyl Graft polymerization of methyl acrylate. Unsaturated polyester resin curing, initiator and cross-linking agent for organic glass adhesives, etc.

2. ‌Curing agent and vulcanizing agent‌: In the medium and low temperature curing of unsaturated polyester resin and the vulcanization of silicone rubber, BPO plays an important role as a curing agent and vulcanizing agent. It can also be used as a bleaching agent and oxidant in chemical production.

3. ‌Pharmaceutical field‌: In the pharmaceutical field, BPO is used to produce auxiliaries for schistosomiasis, penicillin, chloramphenicol and other drugs, as well as pharmaceutical ingredients for treating acne.

4. Flour improvement: In the food industry, BPO was used as a flour whitening agent to bleach flour by releasing active oxygen and improve the quality and storage properties of flour.
